Arcteryx atom ar9/1/2023 ![]() ![]() It would also layer more comfortably over your mid layers and a shell (unless you sized up in the Nuclei FL or Atom AR). ![]() The Nuclei SV is substantially warmer than the Atom AR and definitely the best option for the more ambitious activities you mentioned. I don't mind layering and have taken a base layer, grid-fleece, atom LT, and down jacket to -20C or so and that worked for me.Īlternatively, if there's other jackets from other companies I should be looking at. Just how much warmer would the Nuclei SV be?Ĭurrently, I own a Proton LT and other mid-weight down jackets from Patagonia / OR. Which jacket would be best? The Nuclei SV seems like the ticket but super bulky, whereas the Atom AR offers similar levels of warmth for a slightly more compact package, and more casual styling. I like synthetic for the extra safety margin when wet, especially living in the PNW, and it seems the new generation of synthetics aren't that much heavier than down.Īdditionally, I do enjoy landscape and outdoors photography, which at times requires sitting for extended periods of time outdoors and not moving. Maybe aspirations for some Alaska peaks or 5000-6000m peaks in South America. The most demanding use case I'll probably do is a 5-7 day ski traverse, with temps anywhere from 0 to -30C (hopefully not quite that cold!), or winter mountaineering routes (Baker, Rainier). I'm looking for a new synthetic jacket to use as primarily a winter insulating layer for ski touring, winter camping, and generally colder camping conditions. ![]()
